How lithium-ion secondary batteries (LIB) work, and the role of battery separator film (BSF)

In LIB, lithium-ions conduct between positive and negative electrodes through microporous BSF in operetion cycle, charge and discharge. LIB can obtain similar energy with half volume and one-third to half weight in comparison to nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries.

Thin, strong BSF serves to separate the positive and negative electrodes, preventing short internal circuits. At the same time, heat generated in abuse, such as short internal-circuit or overcharge, separator melts and closes pores, shutting down the current and enduring safety.
